Blast Furnace Slag (BFS) is the vital non-metallic byproduct generated during the reduction of [iron ore](https://www.o2oh.com/glossary/iron-ore) into molten [pig iron](https://www.o2oh.com/glossary/pig-iron) within a [blast furnace](https://www.o2oh.com/glossary/blast-furnace).

Primarily a molten mixture of silica, alumina, and lime, BFS absorbs impurities and the gangue material from the iron ore. It floats atop the hot metal before being tapped separately.
