Carbon neutrality is a term used in environmental science to describe a state of no net increase in carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the atmosphere.

Originally, this concept referred to the idea that burning plants or plant-derived fuels would not increase atmospheric CO₂ because the plants would absorb an equal amount of CO₂ through photosynthesis during their growth, resulting in a net-zero balance.

Today, the concept has been expanded to mean any state where the balance between [CO₂ emissions](https://www.o2oh.com/glossary/co2-emission) and absorption is favorable. This includes "offsetting" carbon emitted by human activities or production.

Examples of efforts toward carbon neutrality include:

- Promoting energy-saving technologies and the use of [renewable energy](https://www.o2oh.com/glossary/renewable-energy).
- Increasing the amount of CO₂ absorbed from the atmosphere through initiatives like reforestation.
