Cloud lock-in is a form of [vendor lock-in](https://www.o2oh.com/glossary/vendor-lock-in) where an organization depends heavily on a single cloud provider. This reliance on proprietary [API](https://www.o2oh.com/glossary/api)s, unique data formats, or high egress fees makes migration costly or technically unfeasible.

To protect [digital sovereignty](https://www.o2oh.com/glossary/digital-sovereignty), firms should adopt a “cloud-neutral” approach. Using containerization and open architectures keeps workloads portable, enabling smooth transitions between providers without losing control of infrastructure.
