# Factory Automation (FA)

Factory Automation (FA) is the application of technology, control systems, and machinery—such as robotics, machines, and [PLCs (](https://www.o2oh.com/glossary/programmable-logic-controller-plc)[Programmable Logic Controllers)](https://www.o2oh.com/glossary/programmable-logic-controller-plc)—to perform manufacturing processes with minimal human intervention.

The goal of FA is to enhance productivity by ensuring high volume, consistent quality, and reduced operating costs. It moves beyond simple mechanization to integrate smart systems that manage the entire production workflow, from material handling to assembly and quality control.
