# Hard-to-Abate Sectors

Hard-to-abate sectors—such as steel, cement, and chemicals— are defined as domains where reducing carbon emissions is technically and economically exhausting.

Unlike light industries, which can easily be electrified, these sectors require high-grade process heat and chemical feedstocks currently derived from [fossil fuels](https://www.o2oh.com/glossary/fossil-fuels).

Transformation demands massive capital investment in breakthrough technologies like green hydrogen and carbon capture.
