# Hydrogen Reduction Steelmaking (HRS)

Hydrogen Reduction Steelmaking (HRS), often referred to as H2-DRI (Hydrogen Direct Reduced Iron), is the most crucial low-carbon pathway for the primary steel industry.

It involves using hydrogen gas rather than carbon-based reductants such as [coal](https://www.o2oh.com/glossary/coal) to remove oxygen from [iron ore](https://www.o2oh.com/glossary/iron-ore). This process produces only water vapour (H₂O) as a byproduct, effectively eliminating the massive [**CO₂ emissions**](https://www.o2oh.com/glossary/co2-emission) associated with traditional [Blast Furnaces](https://www.o2oh.com/glossary/blast-furnace).

The key challenge lies in scaling up **green hydrogen production** using renewable electricity economically and integrating this new process with the [Electric Arc Furnace (EAF)](https://www.o2oh.com/glossary/electric-arc-furnace-eaf) route to achieve high-quality steel production globally. HRS is indispensable for the industry to meet its 2050 net-zero commitments.
