# Non-fossil Powered Steel

Non-fossil powered steel, or [Green Steel](https://www.o2oh.com/glossary/green-steel), marks a key advancement in sustainable metallurgy. Traditional production uses carbon-intensive coal, while **Hydrogen Direct Reduction (H-DR)** offers a cleaner alternative.

Using green hydrogen from renewable electricity, the process replaces carbon monoxide with hydrogen as the reducing agent. This eliminates CO2 emissions, producing only water vapor.

Success requires expanding renewable energy infrastructure and optimizing electric arc furnaces for full industrial decarbonization.
