# Scope 1

Scope 1, under the [**GHG Protocol**](https://www.o2oh.com/glossary/ghg-protocol)—an international standard for calculating and reporting greenhouse gas ([GHG](https://www.o2oh.com/glossary/ghg)) emissions—refers to the GHG emissions directly produced by the company itself.

Generally, Scope 1 GHGs include carbon dioxide emitted when fuel is combusted in boilers or generators at factories and offices, as well as exhaust gases from company vehicles that consume gasoline and other fuels.

A more specific example of Scope 1 with a significant impact is GHG emissions from the manufacturing processes of materials such as steel and cement. Reducing these emissions is a challenge not only for individual companies but also for the entire industry and the nation as a whole.

Since Scope 1 represents GHG emission sources that the company can directly manage, it is considered easier to set reduction targets and implement countermeasures.
