# Scrap Steel

Scrap steel is a vital resource for a circular economy. It consists of recycled iron and steel from discarded products, which are re-melted to produce new steel.

While scrap can be used in some traditional [blast furnaces](https://www.o2oh.com/glossary/blast-furnace), it's the primary feedstock for [electric arc furnaces (EAFs)](https://www.o2oh.com/glossary/electric-arc-furnace-eaf), which are becoming a major part of modern steel production globally. Through this method, a significant decrease in power usage and carbon emissions is achieved when measured against using virgin iron ore. Its role is central to sustainable manufacturing and economic growth, turning waste into a critical raw material.
