# Toyota Production System (TPS)

The Toyota Production System (TPS) is a cohesive socio-technical framework established by Toyota to manage manufacturing and logistics. 

Its two foundational pillars are [Jidoka](https://www.o2oh.com/glossary/jidoka) (automation with a human touch, meaning stopping the line when a problem occurs) and [Just-in-Time (JIT)](https://www.o2oh.com/glossary/just-in-time-jit) (producing only what is needed, when it is needed, and in the amount needed).

The overarching goal of TPS is to eliminate [waste (Muda) and overburden (Muri) while reducing inconsistency (Mura)](https://www.o2oh.com/glossary/muri-muda-mura). This system provides the framework for [lean](https://www.o2oh.com/glossary/lean) manufacturing, focusing on maximizing value delivery to the customer while achieving high efficiency and minimizing inventory and costs across the entire value chain.
