Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) Slag is the primary by-product of recycling scrap steel and is distinguished into two main types resulting from the sequential refining phases.
Oxidizing slag is generated early, characterized by high iron oxide (FeO) content, which is key for impurity removal. This dense, hard material is typically processed into road aggregate.
The subsequent Reducing Slag, often produced in a ladle, is low in FeO but rich in calcium oxide (CaO) for desulfurization.
Their different chemical compositions require specialized treatment, but both are essential components in the steel industry's drive toward a circular economy and reduced waste.
