Steelmaking slag is a byproduct of the steelmaking process, which transforms pig iron obtained from the blast furnace into steel—a material known for its high toughness and workability.
There are two main types of steelmaking slag: converter-type slag and electric furnace-type slag. Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) slag is produced during the refining process, where oxygen is blown in along with additives like lime to remove carbon, phosphorus, sulfur, and other impurities from the pig iron. Electric furnace (EAF) slag, on the other hand, is generated when scrap iron is melted and refined.
