Legacy System

A legacy system is any computing hardware, software, or application that is outdated but continues to be used because it performs a critical business function and is too expensive or difficult to replace. These systems often run on obsolete infrastructure and programming languages.

In engineering and manufacturing, legacy systems pose significant risks. While they may be reliable in function, they are typically incompatible with modern technology (like cloud computing or tools), lack necessary security patches, and require highly specialized staff to maintain. Managing or replacing legacy infrastructure is one of the most significant challenges facing industrial firms pursuing digital transformation today.
