The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a key policy tool within the EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). It is a legal mandate for any organization entering the EU market, regardless of location.

It is not a voluntary certification but a prerequisite for market access.

In addition to product identification, the DPP provides the main digital infrastructure for tracking a product’s Carbon Footprint (CFP).

Implementation Timeline

Implementation will occur in phases, depending on product category:

• Batteries (The Forerunner): Under the EU Battery Regulation, a "Battery Passport" will be mandatory from February 2027. This initiative sets the standard for future product passports.

• Priority Categories (2027–2030): Following the ESPR's adoption in 2024, the EU will introduce "Delegated Acts" for high-impact sectors. Digital Passports for apparel, iron and steel, aluminum, furniture, and tires are expected to become mandatory between 2027 and 2030.
